Some Things to Do

Back in Ye Olden Days, I created this blog in large part to help people find things to do with their kids. Along with just wanting to write, I was worried about how isolating it can feel, especially if you’re a new parent home with little kids. Twice a week, I’d come up with a list of activities: a post for the upcoming week, and a post for the upcoming weekend. That led to my job with KidsOutAndAbout, and gradually I started telling people to just go there to check the site or subscribe to the newsletter to learn about what’s happening. These days, that calendar gets filled by organizations themselves with help from one of my colleagues. But then I’ll hear about other activities, maybe that’s not super-kid-focused, or that’s coming up so soon that it’s too late to hit the newsletter. But they still sound good. Plus, I just hate hearing later about stuff I’ve missed. If you do, too, this list is for you.

Now through July, there’s a new-this-year Thursday night concert series in downtown Schenectady, the Electric City SummerFest. Cute W biked over there recently, and in addition to the live music, there are vendors, food trucks, and outdoor games set up. It was a lovely neighborhood vibe.

One of my favorite things over the spring and summer is to practice yoga on Sunday mornings at Mohawk Harbor. If you ever go, look for me toward the front right, doing my best to stay in the shade. It looks like Inner Bliss is also doing yoga along the river on Fridays from 5:30-6:30 pm. Which sounds fantastic, although if I’m free and energetic enough to get out, you’re more likely to find me at the corner for Fearless Fridays.

This Saturday, there a GE Plot Neighborhood Walking Tour. Apparently there may be a few spots left if you call the phone number. If I had paid better attention, I would have tried to buy them earlier. In keeping with the “olde timey” theme, they only accept cash or check. Oh well, I’ll try to be quicker next year, both for y’all and for myself.

This Saturday there’s also an Anti-Data Center protest:

This was a notice served up to me from the No Data Center in Albany Facebook page, a page that was unfamiliar to me prior to that post, but yes, the algorithm knows me.

And finally, a week from today [Whoops, apparently this event has been postponed!], there’s the event that inspired this post, the unveiling of a statue of Dr. Elizabeth Gillette:

I had never heard of this woman, but I am excited to find out, and I’m more than happy to celebrate badass ladies of the past. Besides, how often do you get to attend a statue unveiling?

I learned about this event from the League of Women Voters of Schenectady, of which I am a member, and if you are in my county, you should probably join, too, but even if you’re not, or if you’re not ready to officially join, you can follow them on Facebook.

Which reminds me, in the process of researching for a LWV project, I discovered these t-shirts produced by the LWV of San Francisco, and I absolutely must have one. I just have to decide on my favorite suffragette first. I believe it was inspired by the Suffs musical, which you can watch on YouTube.

Oh! Actually, looking at my calendar, I might go see Monterey Pop at Proctors that same night. It’s part of a whole series of rock documentaries that they’re showing this summer. And it will be quick and easy for me, because I’m going to yoga on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 pm in the Guild Room in Proctors. There’s actually still space, so if you’re interested in joining the class, let me know and I’ll forward you the teacher’s information — unfortunately she doesn’t have a website to link here.

Enjoy your weekend, everyone, and happy Father’s Day!
