On Thanksgiving weekend, we had a quick-turnaround to Christmas, because both daughters were leaving town on Sunday. On Saturday, we found our Christmas tree and decorated it. For the last few years we’ve gone to other places, but when we showed up at Ellms Family Farm, we remembered that it is a wonderful spot to get a tree. If you’re thinking of heading to a tree farm this year, Ellms is awesome.
We lucked out with gorgeous weather: blue skies, not too cold, and just enough snow to look picturesque:

We actually know the Ellms family because J used to do gymnastics with one of their kids. It was lovely to see this cafe named after J’s gymnast friend.

There were tons of beautiful trees just steps from where we parked. When we were still looking, there was a young family where the mom and little one were looking on as the dad lay full length in the snow, attacking a trunk with one of the free saws. Cute W loaned him the power saw he brought along, which makes things much easier, and the rest of our time at the farm, every time we ran into them again it was all smiles and well-wishes. We found our tree very quickly, then took a little time to explore. There were plenty of pre-cut trees and wreaths for sale.

They also had cute set-ups for photo ops. Most of the photos I took actually included my family’s faces, but here are a couple with S’s face obscured.

A snowman version of the Guess Who? game! Isn’t this cute?

But one of my favorite things is that, as the workers trimmed branches from trees, they left them all in a pile that we were allowed to take from for free!

I stocked up on extra branches, and on our recent snow day, I taught S how to make a wreath. We each made one.

While we were at it, I also felt that S should experience that classic of a winter snow day, snow ice cream.

Speaking of tasty delights, I impulse-bought this Divina Chili Fig Spread to add to our Thanksgiving and Christmas-tree-decorating charcuterie, and it is extremely yummy as an addition to your favorite cheese.

The weekend was hectic, but now we get a little breather. The tree’s been trimmed and the stockings are hung.

Next up: Christmas gift shopping.
