Tulip Fest, Mother’s Day, Indian Kill Fishing Day, Hairspray, Baby Animal Days, & More This Weekend
I can’t believe it’s already time for another weekend post!
Thanks very much for those of you who were kind enough to comment here or like/share/comment on the Facebook page. Today I clicked on the Time Magazine Cover link before I caught myself, and then I had to set aside a People magazine at the dentist’s office–the Adele story was safe, but after that, things degenerated. Sigh. Well, I’m trying my best.
We dropped by M’s Girl Scout Leader’s house today, where the fabulously super-motivated woman, who babysits a bunch of kids, was leading the children through this adorable Mother’s Day craft. I had to take a picture.
I’m pretty sure that the lovely tissue-paper flowers are entirely grown-up-made, but the basic container is a cardboard box with wooden popsicle sticks and craft-store wooden cut-outs that the kids could paint and glue by themselves. So if you weren’t so crafty, you could just buy (or pick) some actual flowers. Anyway, I thought it was a good idea if anyone’s still searching for something. There’s also the simple-but-cute decoupage vase. I’d ordered something crafty-oriented that arrived at my house after I’d given up and just sent Mother’s Day cards. Naturally.
Here’s this week’s KidsOutAndAbout.com newsletter. It may interest some of you to know that it contains a giveaway for a week of Tiny Tots Tearoom Camp (among other interesting tidbits). As usual, click on each day for more listings.
Multi-Day/All Weekend:
- Tulip Festival 2012 Here’s my summary from before: We’ve gone to Tulip Fest with the girls repeatedly. It’s a mob scene, but they always have fun. They love the playground, the ginormous bouncy-bounce-slide inflatables, the animals to pet, and the kids’ shows. Cute W and I occasionally hear the music from a distance and spend a few seconds wishing that we could just watch bands and drink beer, but then the girls do something really cute, like when J kept shouting “Hello” to a goat like she expected him to carry on conversation, and that’s fun, too.
- 2012 Baby Animal Days at Indian Ladder Also super-fun, and a mob scene
- Saratoga City Ballet Carnival of the Animals Anyone been to this? Opinions?
- Hairspray at Schenectady Light Opera Company I like both Hairspray and SLOC, so I’m tempted by this one. It’s next weekend, too.
- Got Kids? Sale
- Clifford the Big Red Dog – LIVE at Proctors. Proctors has announced their 2012-2013 season and it looks awesome. Family alert: gift subscription, maybe? Or whole family to Mary Poppins for my birthday?
- Pre-School Story Hour with Pam at the Open Door Bookstore
- Wiggle and Giggle at The Children’s Museum at Saratoga
- FETCH! Lab: Blast Off and Hidden Power Demos at Schenectady Museum & Suits-Bueche Planetarium
- Favorite Author at THE WONDER ROOM
- Star Watch at Grafton Lakes State Park
- 20th Annual Indian Kill Fishing Day & Open House
- Take the Migration Challenge (drop-in program for kids) at Albany Pine Bush
- Creative Art Day at the New York State Museum
- Guided Hike at Up Yonda Farm
- Moss Walk at Mine Kill State Park
- RCHS History Walk: Great Fire
- Twinkle, Twinkle, What’s that Star? at CMOST
- WSL School Carnival at West Sand Lake Elementary
Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13th:

More Easter Stuff, Opera to Go, Boat Show, Troy Night Out, & More This Weekend
We’ve got a nutty-busy weekend planned, including three birthday parties, the Pancake Breakfast and Children’s Used Book Sale at school, the last ice skating lesson of the year, and a soccer game. If I’m super-ambitious, I’ll make it to the Summer Camp Fair at HVCC, too. It’s good to have goals.
Here’s this week’s KidsOutAndAbout.com newsletter.
Multiple days:
- Next Move: Festival of Modern Dance This is curated by Ellen Sinopoli, and I’m a big fan of hers.
- A Raisin in the Sun from Our Own ProductionS This was playing last weekend, too. Any reviews?
- The Great Upstate Boat Show in Queensbury, NY This is a serious drive, but if you’re the type who heads up to Lake George and various Adirondack locations, then it might be right up your alley. On Friday there’s 2 for 1 admission and (all weekend) kids are free, so if you’re the parent of a transportation-enthusiast toddler or preschooler, you might want to grab a like-minded duo to join you.
- Troy Night Out Tonight’s Troy Night Out is a special Kid’s Night Out, which means if you’ve ever considered going, this is the time to do it. And if you’ve never considered it, you should. Along with plenty of other stuff, there’s a bunch of free activities at The Arts Center of the Capital Region.
- Wildlife Program at Thacher Nature Center I just love Thacher.
- Opera to Go presents “Little Red’s Most Unusual Day!” Because it’s free. And it’s culture.
- Town of Colonie Visit with Mr. & Mrs. Easter Bunny at The Crossings of Colonie My prediction: mob scene. This reminds me, did you vote on best playgrounds in the Capital Region? If not, please vote here. Thank you.
- Annual Easter Egg Hunt in the City of Cohoes Anyone know more about this one?
- Natural Egg Dye Workshop at Saratoga Spa State Park You need to pre-register and space is limited.
- Summer Camp Fair at HVCC This is free, with kids’ activities.
- Maple Sugar Open House at 5 Rivers This is the last one of the year.
- Easter Egg Hunt at Schauber Stables Anyone gone to this hunt before?
- Easter Egg Hunt at Wagon Train BBQ in Schenectady–pictures with the Easter Bunny, too

This Week
The girls and I watched the red carpet a bit. Lots of pretty dresses. Their most common criticism was, as M put it, “Too boobish.”
For example, regarding Jennifer Lopez, M said, “The dress is pretty, but I’d like it better if she had an undershirt. . . Maybe a light blue undershirt, so she wasn’t so . . . exposed?”
Of course, over-dressing was not appreciated, either. Glenn Close was wearing a blazer sort of thing, and J immediately pounced, “I don’t like the coat.” But M defended her with: “Well, she’s an old lady, so for an old lady that’s pretty good.” Ugh. That’s a painful compliment.
Oh, oh, oh! It’s off-topic, but have I ever told you my worst compliments ever? There were three, but I can only remember two:
- Once, when I was walking to the YMCA in Brooklyn, a random guy tried to hit on me with, “I need to lose some weight, too. Maybe we can work out together?” Umm, no.
- Back in college, Cute W once said, “Your elbows feel just like my Grandma’s.” Yeah, I pointed out his error. But clearly it wasn’t a deal-breaker.
Just a reminder: click on the day for a list of several items, and I pulled out a few extras here and there just as a sample.
- Preschool Open House at Niskayuna CoPreschool
- free Wind Orchestra Concert
- Legally Blond at Cohoes Music Hall (through the weekend)
- Movies: CELEBRATE SEUSS!-op Nursery School at Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library
- First Friday Hike: Spring is Coming! at Albany Pine Bush
- Homespun DELMAR Barn Dance
Hey, this Saturday, I’m going to be at Hannaford Kidz Expo 2012 at the Empire State Plaza with Deb and June from KidsOutAndAbout.com! Stop by and see us!

Let’s Get This Party Started!
We’ve decided to relax this weekend and not do too much of anything. Good idea. Except that when the girls appear to be playing contentedly on their own, it often means that they are Up To No Good.
Exhibit A:
I was taking out the recycling when I noticed that my good stock pot was outside holding a very large rock. There was anger, my friends. Deep anger.
I stormed into the house and demanded an explanation. It was only when M explained (while J moaned and sobbed) what they’d been doing that I realized that the rock was stuck in the pot. In fact, they had used a quantity of butter to ease it out, to no avail. There was a heated review of:
- The primary problem. They frequently use items that don’t belong to them without prior permission (with some discussion of my scissors, their father’s brush, and, frankly, just about everything in the house);
- Scenarios involving a potential alternate universe in which Everything Would Have Gone Just Fine If They Had Only Come To Me First (in which I would have gladly offered a bucket or my back-up, chipped enamel stock pot from college days);
- Their lack of respect and utter ignorance of the cost and consequences of their actions (this because M said, and I quote, “If we can’t get the rock out you can just buy another one”); and
- The possible dire consequences (in which I offered an off-the-cuff estimate of an approximate cash penalty of $50 to $60 for replacing the pot.
As it turns out, I was able to remove the rock almost immediately, using a tool that remains far more effective than smears of grimey butter: gravity. I came back in, announced a reprieve from the cash penalty, and sent them into the kitchen to wash, dry, and polish the pot. This was accomplished with more sobbing from J, eye-rolling from M, and bickering between them.
Then I felt compelled to review the ground rules again: 1) Ask me first, and 2) When you don’t ask me first, tell me immediately before I am left to discover something myself, which leads to Great Maternal Wrath.
So, what the heck are we all going to do for the next week to keep our kids from getting up to no good? There’s a ton going on.
Day by day:
- Monday, February 20th
- Tuesday, February 21st
- Wednesday, February 22nd
- Thursday, February 23rd
- Friday, February 24th
Or you can always take a mini-vacation in the form of a day trip or a one- or two-nighter somewhere nearby. Cute W and I are big last-minute Priceline-a-hotel fans). Some posts about places to consider:
- New York City (the public library, a spring trip there
- Jiminy Peak
- Cooperstown (a review of the Farmers Museum at KidsOutAndAbout.com)
- Some short trip suggestions (Boston, Rochester, and New York City again)
Right now Monday and Tuesday look like the best weather days.
If you’ve got younger kids, I’m a huge fan of Steamer 10 Theatre. Their shows are selling out, so act soon if you want to go to something. And (broken record here) consider the Steamer 10 Pass.
Plenty of libraries have free activities planned. Here are a few: at Guilderland Public Library, East Greenbush Community Library, and Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library.
There’s always a movie, and The Secret World of Arietty is out.
So, what are we going to do?
Umm, I don’t know. We’ll probably ice skate at least once, we’re trying out a new gymnastics class, the girls have dental appointments, and we might try a day trip somewhere. And in between, my children will do their best to destroy the house and everything in it.

Flurry, Scooby Doo, Star Shows, Mac-n-Cheese, & More This Weekend
You missed the fun at our house this afternoon. J put on a Lady Gaga fashion show. I don’t know exactly where this came from. Yes, we do listen to her sometimes, but they haven’t had that much exposure. For example, when the fashion show was announced, I shouted, “Okay, but no meat dresses, please!” and they had no idea what I was talking about. Nevertheless, the impression was still pretty accurate. Accessories included tattoos, veils, and a snake. It was hilarious. I took pictures. Actually, first I asked if I could take pictures, and I was granted permission, and then I asked if I could put them on the blog, and she said no. Sorry, folks.
Then M said, “Oh, wait! I’m going to take pictures with my camera, too!” That was a no-brainer. No. No, no, no. M pouted and I said, “Even if you don’t think so now, it will be too tempting later. You’ll want to show your friends and laugh about it.” M paused for a moment, then said, “Yeah, that’s probably wise, Mom.”
Adorable photos of the 7-year-old and the 9-year-old admits I’m right? Now that’s a good afternoon.

Silly Snowflakes, Pine Bush Pups, Hikes, Intergalactic Nemesis and More This Week
Oh my gosh, I am so-so-so excited to be watching Downton Abbey again! Yippee! Cute W didn’t see much of the first season, so I was trying to get him caught up. Whoa, there’s quite a bit going on.
Lucky for me, I’d already done most of the weekly post, so I don’t have to think too hard about this one.
And speaking of lucky, back in elementary school I read that if you were born on the 13th of any month, then Friday the 13ths are particularly lucky for you.
